The state’s largest resiliency park — it’s also one of the largest resiliency parks in the country — will be able to detain up to 2 million gallons of stormwater during heavy rains to mitigate flooding in Northwest Hoboken. The park, renamed ResilienCity Park, cost roughly $50 million to build on land that had housed a chemical plant from 1922 until 2004. Construction began in September 2019 after the city purchased the property in 2016 for $30 million. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) kicked in $10 million and the Hudson County Open Space Trust Fund provided two grants totaling $1 million. The ribbon-cutting Monday will be the second for the park. City officials opened a portion of the park in late March and held a ceremony there in early April. The park’s amenities include a new multi-purpose athletic field, a basketball court that doubles as a stormwater detention basin, playground, open lawn space, water spray area and more.
